HK Society Lecture: "China's Solar Calendar - An Epic Adventure around China" by Dominic Johnson-Hill

We are delighted that long term HK and China resident, Dominic Johnson-Hill, has agreed to present stories and photos of his epic journey around rural China examining how the 3,000 year old Chinese solar calendar has impacted customs and traditions throughout China and how these are still celebrated in the country today.

The 24 solar terms have guided farming activities in China for millennia and remain a large part of Chinese culture to this day. As part of a documentary series “Seasons of China”, Dominic visited over 40 locations all over China, from deserts to pristine mountain ranges, through the extreme cold of the north and the humid heat of the south, from remote farmlands to rapidly expanding megacities, Dominic offers a perceptive insight into the history behind China’s rich ritual heritage.

A fluent mandarin-speaker, Dominic Johnson-Hill is a British artist and award-winning entrepreneur, who has lived in China since 1993. He is founder of Beijing street-wear brand Plastered 8.
