Treaty Port Vineyards

Chris & Treaty established Treaty Port Vineyards (www.treatyport.com) in 2004 and planted 18 hectares of vines imported from France in 2005 and 2007. Wine has been made in the old treaty port of Chefoo (now called Yantai, Shandong) since the early 20th century, but this is the first vineyard planted on the granite slopes of Qiushan. A number of winemakers have followed Treaty Port’s lead; Lafite planted its first vineyard in Asia on a neighbouring plot, producing its first vintage in 2017. It has taken several years to work out the varietals and cultivation methods best suited to the climate and local taste. The full harrowing story can be read in “A Decent Bottle of Wine in China”, available on Amazon. Treaty Port wines are distributed in the UK through www.therealwineco.co.uk.
